short english version:

Bibble 5.0 has been released.
this new preset gives a nice warm summer feeling on the press of a button.
please keep any support questions to the bibble forums.
about the picture:
sylvie on a mowed down field south of munich.
a lot of afternoon sun and a radio-synced flash.

prinzessin

prinzessin auf der wiese

mit der prinzessin einen schoenen tag in muenchen verbracht.

viele photos gemacht, was sonst.

bibble 5 – preview and preset

02.Feb 2009 | | Comments (1) »

02.02.2008

i have been using Bibble for years now. great software.
last weekend a preview version of Bibble 5 has been released.

still a bit rough around the edges, but it is a diamond already.
not every camera is supported for the time being and some features
had to be switched off to avoid redundant bug reports.

highlights among the new things are versions of the same image,
layers with regional editing, better colour handling,
a database backend, and an elegant and fast interface.
not to mention it really gets faster with every processor your computer has.

and one convenient feature, that will be great for the community: presets.

they have been there before, but now they are easy to organize and apply.
and of course to share. so i’ll start with a polaroid simulation:

pola 922 xmp file (zipped)

unpack and put it into the folder “.\presets” of your bibble 5 settings.
start bibble 5. activate the preset for the selected images in the presets tool.

dont forget to crop to 100:103 ratio, almost square, but prime. enjoy.

what this preset does:
- adjust colour curves for the basic look
- add some vibrance and contrast
- vignetting!
- switches off the sharpening

if you want the go with the pola-look you really need the vignette.
and go very easy on the sharpening. some tiny blur wouldnt be bad,
but switching it off and not sharpen when preparing for output is good enough.

the frame is of course scanned from a real pola.
the font? no font. handwriting. mine.
sorry, the goodies arent in the presets, just the image treatment.

the image? well, taken exactly one year ago.
i was there to photograph the concerts.
and today i saw the same girl in a cafe in town.
didnt remember until i was too far away.

idea: manual exposure simplified

27.Jan 2009 | | Comments (0) »

recently it occured to me.. most of the time i use pretty much the same way to expose manually. and special settings are very rare. seems like most of the photographers do the same. but still they use manual exposure while they just mimic the behaviour of program mode. mh, makes you think why.

well, manual exposure lets you control the amount of incoming light, while all the automatic modes react to reflected light. manual exposure is indifferent to black or white objects, automatic isnt.

and the idea?

one control – a wheel or up/down buttons – to set the manual exposure just like any automatic exposure would do.

include all exposure parameters: time, aperture and iso. one wheelclick or buttonpress is equivalent to a change of a third of a stop. let the camera choose the change of parameters. the photographer can concentrate on overall light levels. start with low iso, high shutter speed, small aperture. open up the aperture, then raise the time to a reasonable level, only then go up with the iso. with a simplified user interface like this, even small pocket cameras would be able to have a usable manual exposure mode.

of course.. fully equipped cameras should still have the regular manual exposure. but i wouldnt mind my SLRs to have this, too. after all it would let me think in exposure values and absolute light levels again.

so.. which camera manufacturer will be the first to incorporate this? and when?

a walk in the dark

a walk in the dark

it was pretty cold for skirts that short.
beauty knows no pain.

one of the nice things with a camera that knows no limits:
you start to shoot in ludicrous situations.

a dark alley. four legs coming my way. fast.
iso dialled up to 25k.
aperture f2.0.
exposure time 1/320 second.
let them walk by.
turn. syncing the steps.
three seconds later four exposures are done.
every exposure has the legs right on the ground.

at home i fed the D700 raw files to Bibble.
noise ninja did its magic. done.

unfavourable circumstances are a good training place.
